How to Play:
Dust in the Wind is an excellent piece to learn the pattern-picking or Travis-
picking fingerstyle technique. This piece has a syncopated melody played with
the index and middle finger played against a strictly alternating bass line
played in straight eighths. To practice this piece first learn the bass line
alone, then the melody alone, then try putting them together. Once you get the
idea on the first one or two bars the rest of the piece will come easily, just
start slow then build up to full speed. Since it's hard to notate syncopation
in tab I'll give a graphic representation of the syncopated melody's rhythm,
then do a count-off below the first bar with counts only where notes are
to be played. Although this rhythm figure stays pretty constant there are a
few places where the rhythm changes - they are noted in the tab, just
make sure you don't miss the variations. Notice below that you squeeze "p" and
"m" together on the downbeat of One and Three, but otherwise the thumb and
melody fingers aren't plucked together.

The melody notes falling on "ee" and "ah" should be held for a full 1/8th note
except for the "ah" notes falling just before Three and One.

Chords: (Chords are shown with the high E string fingering, however the
high E string is only played on the Am and Dm chords in the
verses, and on the A* chords in the Outro section. The chord
diagrams are notated with the fingerings at the bottom of the
diagram, where there is more than one fingering given choose
whichever fingering works best for you. The chords in this song
are fingerpicked in a syncopated style and not strummed, however
you should take the full chord position at each change and let
notes ring.)
