The bass on this song is played by Ray Manzarek on a Fender
Rhodes Piano Bass, not a bass guitar. Play it with your
fingers and listen to the recording to pick up on the exact
timbre of the notes. You can transpose the strings however
you like, as the bassline is not originally written for the
bass guitar. This is just the way I prefer to play it and
think sounds best. This is the whole song from beginning to
end, at least 99% accurate.
Though quite a long song, the bassline is not terribly difficult.
The only real challenge is the shifting time signature. The song
is in 4/4, except for some measures in 3/2, which are denoted by
a (3/2) below them.
To be clear, this song does not consist only of single notes,
there are chords. When chords are played on the Fender Rhodes
Piano Bass, the effect is to make them sound like overdriven
single notes. This tab represents a reasonable approximation
of which notes were emphasized in this manner. If you don't
care to play them, then just play their roots and it will sound
just fine. However, I'd advise playing the last measures just
as they are transcribed, or the ending just won't sound right.
Apart from that, it's easy to extract the basic riffs and just
improvise on them.
